Peter Shaffer: Black Comedy

farce

Planned premier: 30 January 2026
Csokonai Fórum, Latinovits Zoltán Stage

Perhaps the most frequently performed one-act play in Hungary (after Amadeus) from world-renowned English playwright Peter Shaffer, Black Comedy provides theatrical artists with excellent opportunities for acting – as well as audiences with unique and exhilarating experiences. The reason for this is that everything the audience usually perceives in the light now takes place in darkness and all things that should take place in darkness are now fiercely illuminated. In the apartment of Brindsley, the sculptor – where the hero is preparing for fateful events: a marriage proposal and a reception for an art collector – the fuse suddenly goes out, plunging everything into darkness, while the anticipated and unexpected guests become completely unhinged. That is, they are behaving just as the lights that are playing a trick on them: instead of their “brighter” side, they show their “darker” self, and instead of their unfriendly self, they reveal their kindest side. Darkness and light, brightness and shadow thus draw out the hidden and secret aspects of the various characters’ personalities, thereby allowing viewers to encounter their own “darker” side…
