Pál Ábrahám: Viktória

light opera in three acts

Scheduled premiere: 11 April 2025

A magnificent love story across borders and history itself unfolds in Ábrahám Pál’s grandest and most successful work. The tale of Countess Viktória and István Koltay, lovers separated by the turmoil of World War I can be seen as a symbol of “history repeating itself” and a precursor to today’s complex geopolitical situation. The lovers drift between various locations, caught in the tensions between the great powers—Russia, the USA, and even Japan—much like the conflicts we witness today. As Viktória and István are periodically reunited and separated, they cross paths with John Cunlight, the American ambassador who seeks the Countess’s hand in marriage, but also generously and selflessly aids them in finding happiness. As the story evolves across numerous locations, this diversity is reflected in the musical landscape as well, blending exotic Japanese tones with Hungarian melodies and American jazz motifs—all of which are given special emphasis in Eszter Novák’s direction.
