King George VI of the United Kingdom, who has struggled with a severe speech impediment — stuttering — since childhood, is preparing for one of the most challenging public speeches of his reign. On September 3, 1939, he must announce—via radio—that Great Britain is declaring war on the Third Reich.
Elizabeth, the king’s wife, seeks out a well regarded speech therapist who uses unconventional pedagogical methods to help overcome the psychological barriers that trigger the king’s stutter. Bertalan Bagó’s play humorously and elegantly follows this learning process and the friendship that develops between teacher and student. The friendship between the two men becomes a lifelong gift for both—and perhaps for all of England.
