King George VI of the United Kingdom, who struggled with a severe speech impediment — stuttering — since childhood, is preparing for one of the most challenging public speeches of his reign. On 3 September 1939, he must announce—via radio broadcast—that Great Britain is declaring war on the Third Reich.
Elizabeth, the king’s wife, seeks out a well-regarded speech therapist who uses unconventional methods to help the monarch overcome the psychological barriers that trigger his stuttering. Bertalan Bagó’s play humorously and elegantly follows this learning process and the friendship that develops between teacher and student. The friendship between the men proves to be a lifelong gift for both of them—and perhaps for all of England.
