The characters of the story set in the pub in Irgacs: Lajos, the kind-hearted pub owner, his daughter, the longing Masni, Csipesz, the funny man with a strange manner of speech, his beloved wife, Jucika, who often swears and likes using “f” words, Satan, frozen in alcohol, Retek, the ex-policeman stuck in a managerial role, and the communion wine-drinking priest all come to life in Zoltán Egressy’s most popular and most frequently performed play to date, Portugal. As to whether they truly come to life? That’s hard to say. The characters, representing stillness and desires that remain unfulfilled due to a lack of willpower, seem to exist as unconscious puppets in this hamlet and village pub, symbolizing our world languishing in helplessness. Thus, when a young intellectual arrives from the capital, he is faced with a tasks that seems daunting – for them as well as for us. A potentially enormous task. If he’s capable of dealing with it. Whether or not this is the case, we will surely find out from the play directed by Marcel Bélai.
