Set in the village of Anatevka, in the musical based on Sholem Aleichem’s short story “Tevye the Dairyman“, it seems as if fate, or perhaps Yahweh himself, has conspired against our protagonist, Tevye. He seeks to marry off the three eldest of his five daughters while insisting on their Jewish religious traditions – thus employing the services of matchmaker – and with their financial well-being in mind, yet the girls want to marry for love and not out of “wise consideration”. However, the world around Tevye is changing, not simply because of family customs, but also due to the ambitions of the broader political climate. For in Russia, it is the Tsar who decides in matters concerning the fate of the Jews and their expulsion from the empire. As to whether this kind-hearted man is capable of handling this double pressure is something that audiences in Debrecen can see for themselves thanks to the work of director Dániel Halasi, the melodies of composer Jerry Bock and the lyrics of Sheldon Harnick.
