The heroes of Oscar- and two-time Golden Globe-winning world-famous author Martin McDonagh are typically faced with severely limited options. The setting for McDonagh’s plays, the Irish landscape, is enclosed and motionless, which lends a unique, sweet and somber nature to his characters due to the peculiarities of this region. Yet those who focus on the brighter side of the soul – like Billy, the protagonist of The Cripple of Inishmaan – can seize a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity and follow their dreams to Hollywood stardom. Thanks to Iván Hargitai’s directorial efforts, viewers can follow Billy to find out whether he managed to overcome his difficulties and whether he dares to stand up to his two aunts, who raised him and his surroundings to rewrite the “rules” of his homeland.
