Jean Genet: The Maids

groteszk játék

Planned premiere: 23 January 2026
Csokonai Fórum, Kóti Árpád Stage

“Maids must be caught red-handed, surprised in their solitude, or if you will, in the solitude that every human being feels. Whether this seems unnatural or not, these maids are beasts, just like us, when we dream about this or that,” said Jean Genet, the former French inmate, criminal-turned novelist and playwright on his first play that debuted in 1947. Although this took place a long time ago and despite all the comings and goings of regimes and political systems since then, people still remain the same. After all, in hierarchical relationships, such as the one between the two main characters of the drama, the maids, Solange and Claire and their mistress, Madame, feelings still exist in pairs: love and hate, fear and determination, humility and rebellion. This is precisely why those who are imitated for this very reason are ridiculed, but also envied, and treated as “monsters” who should be eliminated…
