In 1824 a barber from Leipzig named Woyzeck, murdered his wife driven by jealousy. He was executed, and a newspaper article reported on the event. This article inspired Georg Büchner to write the barber’s story in four different versions, though none of them were completed. The remaining fragments thus serve merely as inspiration for a new interpretation of Woyzeck, which in this case offers some guidance for director Tompa Gábor’s vision. This is not his first encounter with this immortal work—he first staged it in Sfântu Gheorghe, where he developed a metaphorical language and incorporated several motifs into his production, such as the market scene set in the foyer to immediately engage the audience, or the glass cage and the Doctor’s vehicle. These elements were later adapted, with some variations, in his productions in Novi Sad and Bucharest. With this background, it is particularly intriguing to see how he envisions bringing it to the stage in Debrecen, what this mysterious story represents for him in our constantly changing, fast-paced world.
