The date is 1692 and the place is the town of Salem, recently founded by American Protestant settlers. The primeval forest lurks on the outskirts of the town. The unstable local community is constantly beset by permanent threats in the form of wolves, Indian tribes, and starvation. Hardship and necessity ultimately forge a shield-like invincible force that is capable of protecting the community from all dangers.

One night, a group of young girls are caught dancing naked in the woods, trying to summon spirits. During their interrogation, the girls fall into a trance and accuse the residents of the small town of siding with the devil. However, these individuals are immediately arrested and subjected to torture. This leads to an outbreak of mass hysteria, where no one is safe. Anyone might accuse their neighbor of being a witch. Greed, envy, or petty revenge are morally justified in the name of the divine battle between God and Lucifer, while politics can become a matter of life and death, and God’s scourge becomes the judge and sole embodiment of morality…
