Planned premiere: 5 December 2025
Csokonai Theatre

Debrecen was an important location in the life of Mór Jókai. The months spent here during the 1848–49 Hungarian Revolution, the history of the civic city, its Calvinist traditions, the legends of the Great Forest, the local student scene and marketplace all had an impact on his oeuvre, whether this concerned the cunning and resourceful students of the Lunatic of Debrecen or And Yet the Earth Moves or the spirited merchants and truth-seeking heroines of A Woman’s Heart Fighting the Heavens or those featured in his short story about the great fire of 1670 entitled Two Weddings.

In 2025 – on the occasion of the writer’s 200th birthday – the Csokonai National Theater is paying homage to the author’s works with a performance that not only evokes his writings inspired by Debrecen, but also takes audiences on a whirlwind tour of the city’s history from the Turkish occupation through the Rákóczi War of Independence to the 19th century.
