Zsolt Győrei – Csaba Schlachtovszky: Erkel and the Revolt

musical comedy in two acts

Premiere: 25 October 2024
Csokonai Fórum, Latinovits Zoltán stage

Few people know today how close the Hungarians came to winning the War of Independence early on, in the autumn of 1848. This musical comedy, directed by Zalán Zakariás, builds on those precious moments. If the determined singers of the Szarvas Tavern in Gyula had succeeded in kidnapping Marshal Radetzky’s daughter, the lady of the Wenckheim Castle, the Austrian imperial army would surely have laid down their arms immediately… Yet life doesn’t follow a fictional script, and nothing comes easily. Thus, our protagonist Ferenc Erkel willingly sacrifices his dream of resting to save what can be saved, caught in the crossfire of conspirators and the obsessive plans of the newly-crowned, eighteen-year-old Emperor Franz Joseph.
