Gradient Contemporary Ballet Debrecen, our Theatre’s modern dance company is preparing for their first ever premiere on 7th February: Reverie is a performance that has its roots in literature and explores the depths of the human experience.
The Csokonai National Theatre dance company has taken a new bold and exciting form for the 2024/25 season. With the arrival of Edit Domoszlai as the head of the dance department, they have set out to push the art of contemporary dance to its very limits. Our extraordinary group of dancers come from many different countries and backgrounds, but they are connected by their common language: movement. Through their art, they aim to express the most delicate emotions and tell stories that would be impossible through any other medium.
Comprising two pieces, Reverie is an enchanting and unique contemporary dance performance. The first part, Sirius inspired by Árpád Tóth’s poem From soul to soul, which portrays the challenges of connection using the metaphor of the vast distances between stars. The title refers to Sirius, the brightest star in the night sky, symbolizing both the mystery of the distant unknown and a guiding beacon of hope.
At the heart of Fine Day, the second part of the performance, are real, personal stories from young dancers, reflecting their inner worlds and the challenges of the wider world around them. The title takes its cue from Jane’s 1983 song It’s a Fine Day, bridging the questions of the past with the realities of today. The piece aims to capture some of Gen Z’s experiences and qualities today—resilience in navigating uncertainty, appreciation of diversity, empathy, and collaboration, and their enduring hope for a brighter tomorrow.
The evening is accompanied by music made by talented artists Erkki-Sven Tüür and Előd Abonyi, to create an otherworldy atmosphere.
